Ted Sirota’s Rebel Souls

I received immense pleasure hearing and seeing the Rebel Souls play last night
at the Green Mill. It was particularly great to once again experience the
spirit of the Rebel Souls, with fundamental members Ted, Kevin, and Jeff, along
with Jeb and Josh.
(T-K-J cubed). It appeared the band members
were having fun too. The combining of saxophones and trombone with a
rhythm section of bass, guitar, and drums is delightful and a rather
unique quintet formation - especially with the
awesome drumming of Ted as leader.
(Ted; bringing forth the Blakey messenger theme).
Some other bone-saxy examples:
-Sonny Rollins with Clifton
Anderson in the Sonny Rollins Quintet plus (Sonny Rollins, sax, with Clifton
Anderson, trombone, Stephen Scott, piano, Bob Cranshaw, electric bass, Steve
Jordan, drums, and Kimati Dinizulu, percussion) in June 2002 at Ravinia
-Chris Potter with Robin
Eubanks in Dave Holland's Quintet (vibes rather than guitar-Dave Holland,
bass, with Chris Potter, sax, Robin Eubanks, trombone, Steve Nelson,
vibes, Billy Kilson, drums) in June 2002 at Jazz Showcase
-Ernest Dawkins with
Steve Berry in New Horizons Ensemble - closest thing but traditionally a
sextet (Ernest Dawkins, sax, Steve Berry trombone, Ameen Muhammad on
trumpet-Maurice Brown to replace on Paris tour, Jeff Parker on guitar, Darius
Savage on bass, and Isaiah Spencer on drums) in January 2003 at Velvet Lounge.
The tunes performed by the
Rebel Souls were very delightful...of course, the classic original Rebel
Souls' member tunes, such as Kevin Kizer’s “Voids”, Ted Sirota’s “Geronimo’s
Free”, dedicated to Geronimo ji Jagal, “Propaganda”, “La Danse de Janvier”, and
Jeff Parker’s “Little Spots”, “Wait”, and “Hemiola”. Other selections such as Nette
and the Charles Lloyd’s composition were equally interesting. It was
a great sound considering the band had just one rehearsal and 3 hours of playing
the previous night. I guess that is what jazz/improvisation amongst
professionals is all about.
The Green Mill audience was
rather impressed; their mouths were hinged opened a few times! One man
sitting next to me mentioned he sees all kinds of music in Chicago, and was
really enjoying the sound…said he felt like yelling “Yeah” out a few times, but
thought it was too quiet for it!
I look forward to seeing the
band play at the Hothouse next Thursday, March 13 and future events to
unfold. It would be nice to hear Kizer’s
“Becky*’s Bash” played again, maybe in time and with another horn or two. Guess it’s complexity takes a bit more time
to unravel (hmmm…)
