A bad week for the nightclub business. Given how
closely-knit the community
is on the South Side, it's probable that nearly everyone either knows someone
who was actually involved in the E2 tragedy or knows someone who has a friend
or relative who was. My sympathies to everyone; small comfort, but all I have
Thanks to everyone who sent b-day greetings and healthcare tips. I'm still a
bit under the weather but feeling much better than I was a week ago. It was
probably a good thing that I was sick last Saturday while playing Zvonimir's
gig; if I'd been healthy I think I'd have put the restaurant-owner's head
into a tank full of vengeful lobsters.
Speaking of vengeful lobsters, the new agent that's handling the Pong Unit
could use a stay in the crustacean hotel. Is there a qualified agent out
there who might like to make a lot of money booking us? An adult, please.
Someone whose grasp of the calendar is better than Bob Long's. Someone who
understands what a contract means, and the necessity for getting one for a
gig, por favor.
This week Steven Hashimoto hopes that at least 50% of the following gigs
WEDS. 2/26: ANDY'S, 11 E. Hubbard, noon-2:30pm, with guitarist Pat Fleming.
I'm getting murmurs on the grapevine that this may be the end of Jazz at Noon
for us (again), but I may be wrong. Then, later on, at GATEWAY BAR & GRILL,
7545 N. Clark St., 7:30-10:30pm, with Pat.
FRI. 2/28: UNITED CENTER, 6-7:30pm, for a Chicago Bulls pre-game, with The
Steven Hashimoto Sextet (Brian Gephart, Mike McLaughlin, John Lewis, Bryan
Nichols and Heath Chappell). Then, later on, as always, at THE GREEN MILL,
4802 N. Broadway, 1:30-3:45am, with The Green Mill Quartet (Barely Winograd,
bari sax; Bob Long, piano; Rick Shandling, drums) for The After-Hours Jam
SAT. 3/1: THE GREEN MILL, 4802 N. Broadway, 8pm-midnight, with The Sueños
Latin-Jazz Sextet (Mike Levin, sax; Neal Alger, guitar; Bob Long, keyboards;
Alejo Poveda, percussion; Heath Chappell, drums).
SUN. 3/2: THE GREEN MILL, 4802 N. Broadway, 8-10pm, with poet Marc Smith and
The Pong Unit (Mike Smith, guitar; Dave Flippo, keyboards; Ted Sirota, drums)
for The Uptown Poetry Slam. We have a CD! Come to the gig and buy some!
I could use to fill most of the Saturdays in March! Call me at 708-222-6520.
