The Empire Builders, play; Dropp Ensemble, music

Hello all, Longbox recordings http://www.longboxrecordings.com/ and sense of urgency theatre http://www.senseofurgency.org/ invite you to an evening of music and theatre It starts with a performance of Boris Vian's '50's absurdist masterpiece, 'the empire builders' - you can read all about it below. The evening concludes with a special live performance by the Dropp Ensemble with Josh Berman-coronet, Sam Dellaria-electronics, Steven Hess-percussion, Jason Roebke-bass, Aram Shelton-reeds, Adam Sonderberg-mics/guitar/lazy susan.  The groups, with a slightly different line-up, contribute the prerecorded soundtrack to the play, which is available on CD from Longbox recordings. Think Morton Feldman meets mirror.

Following its Jeff-Recommended production of Reckless, Sense of Urgency Theatre proudly continues its eighth season with a revival of Boris Vian’s absurdist masterpiece, The Empire Builders.  This production, the company's 17th, is both a celebration of this fine play and a tribute to the life and work of Boris Vian.  The play opens Friday, April 18th at The Viaduct, located at 3111 N. Western, Chicago IL. Directed by Robert Dorjath, The Empire Builders has a scheduled run of April 18th through May 17th 2003.  Performance times are Thursdays, Saturdays at 8pm, and Sundays at 7pm.

In Vian's brilliant dark comedy, a respectable middle class family is prompted by an indefinable terror to flee from apartment to apartment, into ever more substandard and constricting circumstances.  While they feel temporarily safe, confident they are building their own personal empire on earth, they are constantly on the run and their world is forever narrowing.  And everywhere they go there is the Schmürz, a pitiably denatured person, whom they continually flog and maltreat, yet whose existence they refuse to collectively recognize.  But the Schmürz always awaits them and the Schmürz never dies. In the world we've inherited after September 11th, with seemingly arbitrary terror alert warnings, recommendations for duct-taped safe rooms, and incursions on our long-standing liberties, Vian's play asks us to consider how we ought to face our fears, and what it means to remain free in the face of random terror.  More information/reservations:

JAZZ JAM – every SATURDAY AFTERNOON
While it will mainly be a Jazz Jam focusing on jamming improvisational Jazz music, we'll be open to various other styles that people want to jam on so those of you who mainly play rock or funk or jam band music, keep in mind the type of jazz I do is very much funk oriented so you'll completely be able to sit in on songs, and yes for you hard-core Jazz heads we'll be doing some standards, as well by popular demand this will give an opportunity to some of the younger musicians who want to attend Jazz jams but aren't able to stay out late on weekday nights...keep in mind the Anchor Inn is a 21+ venue so those of you under-age will need a parent or guardian to attend with you also if entire bands want to get up and jam for 15 minutes or so, that’s all good with me, there will be a sign-up sheet at the door, or email me in advance and let me know you want to have your band jam. There will be no cover charge.... we're gonna have some fun with this and possibly get a few sponsors and have giveaways at the events, as well as occasionally having a clinic by guest musicians talking about Jazz and/or improvisation peace -
