A 50th Anniversary Celebration of Delmark Records
In honor of Delmark’s anniversary, this concert features Johnny B. Moore and Jimmy Burns;
Jodie Christian and Fred Anderson; and Ernest Dawkins’ New Horizons Ensemble featuring Jeff Parker.
Founder and owner Bob Koester was a student at St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri, when he started the Delmark label
by recording a local St. Louis Dixieland band, the Windy City Six, on September 19, 1953. "They deserved to be recorded."
says Koester. Fifty years later, Delmark is one of the oldest independently run labels still owned and operated by its founder,
and Koester still operates under the same philosophy of giving deserving artists a chance to record their art. Delmark Records'
catalogue reads like a who's who in the history of blues and jazz music: Junior Wells, Magic Sam, Otis Rush, Luther Allison,
Sleepy John Estes, Big Joe Williams, Bud Powell, Coleman Hawkins, Dinah Washington, Von Freeman, Archie Shepp,
Pharoah Sanders, Roscoe Mitchell, Anthony Braxton, Fred Anderson and Joseph Jarman. Many artists made their recording debuts
on Delmark. Some of the genre’s "essential" recordings are contained in Delmark's catalogue as well: Junior Well's Hoodoo Man Blues,
Magic Sam's West Side Soul, Otis Rush's Cold Day In Hell, Anthony Braxton's For Alto, Roscoe Mitchell's Sound, and the first
recordings by the influential Chicago avant garde jazz group A.A.C.M. (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians).
