Jazz Returns To 47th Street

The Sutherland Community Arts Initiative (SCAI) presents "No Room For Squares,"

a celebration of jazz solidarity and the renewal of the Bronzeville jazz spirit.

This event will feature Delmark recording artist and Bronzeville native Malachi Thompson

and his Freebop Band featuring legendary saxophonists Gary Bartz and Billy Harper.

This concert is a prelude to the groups 25th annual season.

The Freebop Band got it's start in NYC in 1978 as part of the loft jazz scene in

Lower Manhattan and the East Village and has since achieved international acclaim.

To commemorate the 25th annual season Malachi is recording his 11th album for the Delmark record label.

This project will combine Thompson's Africa Brass with the Freebop Band.

Delmark records received support from Aaron Copeland Fund For Music

to record Thompson's Black Metropolis Suite, a musical tribute to the Bronzeville community.

The Spoken Word Cafe is the first in a number of new cultural destinations coming to Bronzeville

and the 47th Street corridor. The proprietor, Jimalita Tillman describes The Spoken Word Cafe as

"... upscale, with an intimate environment where people can relax, meet with friends and network.

My plan is to present seasoned international artists and also be a venue for young up and coming artists."

Come out and be a part of this history making event!

TO BE ANNOUNCED the NEXT Ken & Jim Show

Bassist, Ken Haebich and saxophonist, Jim Gailloreto host

the Experimental Music Series at Nevin's Live.

These shows take place every month and feature a unique blend

of improvisation and collaboration with extraordinary

guest artists every performance. Past shows have featured:

Word Jazz creator-Ken Nordine, singer-Kurt Elling,

Indian percussionist-Kalyan Pathak, keyboardist-Jim Baker,

Flamenco dancer-Corina La Jazmin, Opera soprano-Winifred Brown,

comedian-Matt North.

For more information on The Ken & Jim Show:

I missed the last show November 8th with jazz Legend Roscoe Mitchell.

Bet that was fun. The Collaboration between The Ken & Jim Show and

Roscoe Mitchell included Keyboardist Jim Baker and Percussionist Tim Mulvena.

Roscoe Mitchell--As both musician and composer, Mitchell is always the scientist,

tirelessly experimenting with musical forms, textures and instrumentation.

The more you learn about multi-instrumentalist Roscoe Mitchell's work,

you just have to be more and more impressed by this icon of avant garde jazz.

Even the most cursory book about the history of post-war jazz has to deal with

Mitchell's work. His enormous catalog of works have included pieces for string

ensembles, trios, percussion ensembles, orchestras, a recorder ensemble, toy

instruments and his own solo horns. In Robert Jourdain's MUSIC, THE BRAIN,

AND ECSTACY, the author describes how humans are able to take different sounds

from instruments and configure this information in our brain as 'music.' An important part

of Mitchell's work has been to deconfigure and reconfigure these sounds into strange

new patterns that aren't bound by conventional melody or rhythm, and thus rethink

what we consider to be 'music.' Recent performances of "L-R-G/The Maze/S II Examples"

(with Art Ensemble members Malachi Favors and Joseph Jarman among others) were the

perfect reminder that Mitchell's work doesn't ignore his past achievements, which today

still seem very revolutionary.

Heard the gig with Roscoe was a bigwidedeep groove. What a cat! And so much music...
