Collaboration William Perry, David Boykin and Avreeayl Ra

"You can't do it all, but I heard this was a supendous duality

of drummers when Hamid Drake joined the show"

SUN OCT 20 JAZZ SHOWCASE

Wallace Roney, Gary Bartz, Donald Brown Clarence Seay, Lenny White

"Tuesday, October 15th opening night was wonderful for me. Fabulous sets of music.

Wallace played his blue horn he was gifted from Miles (both share same BDAY as my

g-pal Nancy), and although the band had "unrehearsed together" players they

obviously knew their jazz -- And JAZZ IZ "JAMMIN' " with and without practice...

There was no need to apologize, Clarence (Seay). Bartz blew a lung boggling

"Where or When" in the middle of "Body and Soul". And Lenny White with his handmade

drums and interesting opera conversations. Branford Marsalis' Rhythm section (Tain,

Eric Revis, Joey Calderazzo) came by to listen after their Park West Set.

MON OCT 21 HOTHOUSE 8PM

Sonny Seals Wake - An awesome amount of musicians played tribute -

I SHALL BUT HEAR JAZZ BETTER AFTER DEATH.

TUE OCT 22 11AM THE LIFE CELEBRATION of SONNY SILLS WAS at CHRISTIAN

LOVE BAPTIST CHURCH, 6200 S. Michigan, Chicago. An awesome array of artists

associating with the angels

How do I hear jazz? Let me count the ways,

I hear jazz to the depth and breadth and height

My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight

For the ends of being and ideal grace.

I hear jazz to the level of every day's

Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.

I hear jazz freely, as men and women strive for right.

I hear jazz purely, as they turn from praise.

I hear jazz with the passion put to use

In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.

I hear jazz with a love I seemed to lose

With my lost saints. I hear jazz with the breath,

Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God chooses,

I SHALL BUT HEAR JAZZ BETTER AFTER DEATH.

(Intentionally lifted from the female American poet

Elizabeth Barrett Browning)

FRI DEC 6 8PM SYMPHONY CENTER

BIRDS OF A FEATHER-Kenny Garrett, saxophone, Nicholas Payton, trumpet, Dave Kikoski, piano

Christian McBride, bass, Roy Haynes, drums. Roy Haynes has been an influential and exhilarating drummer

for more than five decades and he shows no sign of slowing down. His Birds of a Feather band is an ensemble

that revisits the primal energy and dazzling virtuosity of his former employer Charlie Parker's combos,

while maintaining the sound and spirit of contemporary jazz.

MCCOY TYNER solo piano Few pianists are an orchestra unto themselves, but McCoy Tyner is certainly one.

Tyner is known for his probing, muscular style, his rich lyrical gifts, and an intensity that few can match.

He has led trios, quartets and big bands, but in any configuration his piano becomes the focal point of the music...

Is this true love, or is it my man McCoy?
