The Jazz Ensemble is a professional big band and is the other repertory ensemble in Chicago.  For this concert they take a departure from repertory and will debut eight new works for the band that Tom Tallman commissioned me to compose and arrange.  We also intend to play two scores by Gil Evans. 

 

In addition to the band's great cast, with Terry Connell, Mark Olen, Mike Moore and Mark Colby, Rich Corpolongo; Scott Mason and Javier Gonzalez join us.  Bassist Rich Armandi will be at the tuba!

Marshall Vente, the versatile Chicago jazz pianist, composer and arranger, has organized the Jazz Festival for ten years. He will appear in trio format on Thursday, January 16. On Friday, January 17 he will appear with his Brazilian jazz ensemble, Tropicale, and on Saturday, January 18 and Sunday, January 19 he will perform with his expanded nonet, Project 9, featuring original compositions created for this year's festival

MARSHALL VENTE JAZZ FESTIVAL CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY WITH SALUTE TO COMPOSER-ARRANGER-PERFORMERS
Joe and Wayne Segal’s Jazz Showcase once again to host festival, January 16 - 19

Chicago, IL, December 2002—Marshmusic, in conjunction with 90.9FM WDCB, Public Radio from the College of DuPage, presents the Marshall Vente Jazz Festival 2003. Having established itself as one of the city's premier jazz events, now in its tenth year, this four-day festival will again be hosted by Joe & Wayne Segal's world-renowned Jazz Showcase, located at 59 W. Grand (Grand and Clark). The tenth annual Marshall Vente Jazz Festival 2003 opens Thursday evening, January 16 and continues through Sunday afternoon, January 19.

Ticket prices for the festival, which runs Thursday through Saturday from 8:30 p.m. to approximately 1 a.m., and Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m., are $25 per person on Friday and Saturday and $20 per person on Thursday and Sunday. A senior/student discount of $3 is available. There is no cover charge for children 12 and under on Sunday. 

The festival will feature a roster of eight composer-arranger-performers, showcasing a wide variety of jazz styles and this year emphasizing new compositions. All of the artists on the roster are composer/arranger/performers and have released numerous recordings.

Thursday night will feature the Orbert Davis Sextet, the Marshall Vente Trio and from NYC, saxophonist Jeff Newell.

Friday is an "All Tropical Night" with the Tropicale ensemble, featuring some very special guests, including vocalist Rita Duarte from Rio de Janeiro. Then the legendary world-renowned Brazilian pianist Cesar Camargo Mariano takes the stage for a virtuoso solo piano set. Mariano’s name is associated with a virtual who’s who of Brazilian music, as a musician, arranger and producer: Elis Regina, Joao Bosco, Gal Costa, Ivan Lins, Sadao Watanabe, Jorge Ben Jor, and Maria Bethania, to name only a few.

A Descarga will follow – all Latin/Brazilian jam session open to all musicians, hosted by Chicago pianist Jose Valdes.

On Saturday night vocalist Joanie Pallatto, Sparrow and the Machine Band will follow the award-winning Marshall Vente/Project 9 ensemble joined by world-renowned saxophonist and sound innovator Billy Harper for another program of all new original music composed and arranged by Marshall specifically for this year's festival.

Sunday afternoon will begin with Chicago’s first lady of jazz, the Judy Roberts Quartet with Greg Fishman, and MV Fest 2003 will wrap-up with a reprise of the Marshall Vente/Project 9/Billy Harper set of Saturday night.

The Marshall Vente Jazz Festival welcomes the Lenox Suites as hotel sponsor. Conveniently located near the Jazz Showcase, the Lenox Suites Hotel has graciously offered a special room rate to festival attendees of $89 single or double occupancy per night (excluding parking and taxes).
